The group phase saw Milan face AEK Athens, Lille and Anderlecht and there was a good start in a 3-0 win against the Greek side. That was followed by a goalless draw in France and a 1-0 win at Anderlecht, with Ricky Kakà on the scoresheet. The Brazilian would go on to hit two in the return match against the Belgians. Two defeats did not change the complexion of the final outcome and Celtic were drawn for the round of last sixteen.

The first leg in Glasgow ended goalless and it took a wonderful Kakà goal in extra-time to finally seal a 1-0 win in the return leg.

Bayern Munich arrived at the San Siro for the quarter-finals looking to revenge their elimination at the hands of Milan the previous year. Although Carlo Ancelotti's side dominated for long periods they fell to a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw but then in Munich produced an assured display to run out 2-0 winners, with Inzaghi and Seedorf once again on the scoresheet. All that remained in the way on the road to Athens was Manchester United.

The Red Devils had put seven goals past Roma in the previous round and got off to a great start in the first leg at Old Trafford, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring on five minutes. However, Kakà was on top of his game and scored twice although Wayne Rooney had the final say with a late winner to leave the tie at 3-2. The game at the San Siro was a completely different matter and in a constant downpour Milan swept the English away in a 3-0 win, with Kakà, Seedorf and Alberto Gilardino all scoring.
